Wednesday Apr 29 Piraeus, Greece

HAL Excursion: Ancient Corinth & Canal

As ports go, Piraeus is big – full of ships from all over as well as the large fleet of local Blue Star Ferries.

The 4-mile long Corinth canal, built to reduce shipping time around/across the Peloponnese peninsula, is impressive but scenic or exciting it is not – though it does appear to be popular with bungee jumpers.  It was a good pit-stop and a chance to buy ice-cold water at a very reasonable price.

The day was beautiful – warm and sunny – and Corinth welcomed us with another display of spring flowers.  Overlooked by its fortified acropolis atop a nearby hill, the city was originally built by the Greeks some four centuries BC and later rebuilt by the Romans around 44 AD.  That is the story of many cities in this part of the world and the excavated ruins are a mix of those two cultures and architectural styles.
