Italy > Greece > Paris - Day 17

Saturday May 02 Rhodes, Greece

No tender to ride today. The approach from the sea was spectacular as you sail into the port of Rhodes. It's one of the best preserved medieval towns in the world. After breakfast we caught the hop on, hop off bus just outside the port gates. It took us on a 40 minute ride up to the Acropolis and then through the new town to the old and that is where we got off. We walked through one of the old gates to reach the old town, stopped for a coffee and to upload some data and photos to the blog. As there was no one else using wi-fi, it was very fast. We then continued walking up to the Palace of the Grand Masters via the Street of the Knights, dating back to the 14th Century. The castle survived an earthquake but was later destroyed by an explosion in 1856 and was later rebuilt by the Italians in 1937 though in the old style with thick walls and turrets, etc. After a leisurely stroll and a lunch of gyros, a lucky nearby cat got the chicken remains from mine, we went through another gate to the outside and between two sets of walls which reminded us of Carcassonne, had a lovely walk back towards the port. It was nice to have many trees around which provided shade. A very pleasant and relaxing day.
