Italy > Greece > Paris - Day 2

Friday Apr 17

On a map of Rome draw a line north from the coliseum and you’ll find our hotel just south of the major street Via Nazionale, and perfectly located for most of the main sights.  It is just a 15 minute walk to the Coliseum and an hour to the Sant’ Angelo bridge (itself just a short walk from St. Peter’s) which is where we headed on this first morning.

Our walk took us through the old city past some of the ruins that we would visit later, and the huge Victor Emmanuel monument with its white marble colonnade.  Past the theatre of Marcellus down to the river Tiber and along its bank to the Sant’Angelo bridge, after a short detour to the market in Campo di Fiori.  Originally built in 136 AD the bridge still boasts ten statues of angels from the 17th century.

After lunch, to take a break from walking cobblestone streets, we took a one-hour boat cruise, which was pleasant enough but with nothing like the interest of Paris or London since the river was long ago turned into a high-walled trench to put an end to frequent flooding.

The bus back to our hotel was jam-packed and though you thought no more could fit, another ten people would squeeze in.  To exit, we literally had to push people out of the bus so we could reach the door.
