Well, you cannot with a clear conscience be in Naples and not visit Pompeii, but... it was hot, dusty, and oh so crowded.  We were two hours on site, which allows time only for the most important fraction of the whole place, but that was enough given the heat, the difficulty hearing our guide, and the constant struggle not to lose her in the crowd of other tour groups.  We did not have that option but a couple from another ship later told us they had arrived at Pompeii at 7.30 in the morning well ahead of the heat and the madding crowd.  I’m sure that made for a quite different experience.

After the obligatory shopping stop (this time a cameo factory) it was back to the cool of the ship and a salad lunch with plenty of sushi, followed by a couple of hours in a pleasant dock-side café uploading more of this blog.

Tomorrow we leave the ship and take the high speed train to Milan and on to Paris.
