South America - Day 15

Wednesday - Up the River Plate to Buenos Aires

The day dawned clear and bright with dead calm water as we head into the estuary towards Buenos Aires.  The water has become very silty with the run-off from rivers flowing into it, and we are navigating a narrow channel where traffic is tightly controlled and a variety of freighters heading out pass us so close it seems we can almost touch them.

It’s now just after one and BA has just come into sight up ahead through the haze.  From here it seems to be skyline of skyscrapers.

After we dock we’re planning to go ashore with our friends in search of a famous Argentinean steak dinner.

BA is one big city – about 4 million people – but it is very modern and feels almost European. Some have called it the Paris of the southern hemisphere and they could be right.

It was/is hot – 40 degrees and humid, but we strolled through part of the city centre, detouring for cold beer and on past the Casa Rosada, the presidential palace (now just government offices) from whose balcony Eva Peron (Evita) would address the crowds.

Then we found our restaurant – an indoor barbecue and salad bar with an all you can eat buffet of meats straight off the BBQ and an extensive salad bar.  Not bad for $25 each including a bottle of wine or jug of beer per person (we didn’t take them all).

Taxi back to the ship, where we are now at 9 pm, trying to be cool.

Hasta manana.
