South America - Day 8

Wednesday – Cruising Chilean Fjords

After another rough five hours of open sea we woke to much calmer waters and for the rest of the day cruised inside channels - a very pleasant change.  This cruise is not for everyone – many of the passengers have been seasick and had not got out of bed all of yesterday!  We actually slept in today until 8.30 a.m. and after a leisurely breakfast listened to a presentation on Pelagic (ocean-going) birds and all the different types of Penguins in the area.  We are looking forward to seeing our first colony of penguins tomorrow.

Around 5.30 p.m. we passed the Santa Leonor wreck, a cargo ship which came to a sad end due to the crew not using the standard port and starboard.  Apparently, the Captain replied to someone’s comment with “all right” and instead of turning to port, the helmsman steered hard right straight into rocks.

In the evening, after another enjoyable dinner, we were entertained by a lassie from Yorkshire, Siobhan Phillips, who covered genres from jazz to pop to opera and was quite amusing in between the songs.
An earlier night tonight as we can’t sleep in and miss our tour which starts at 8.30 a.m.
